I'm a first year... What should I take?

Hey, so a while ago someone asked me to talk about what courses they should take at Carleton University, and I thought to myself. My god I wish someone would of helped me when I was in first year. So to whomever this is for, here's my insight on taking courses at Carleton [From a Communication Studies student's standpoint]

This will be a summary about my life at Carleton so far to help you have a small insight on how I've became the person I am today, a 4th year Comm student in a business minor [heavily in marketing]. If you would like to skip this section scrolls down to the section without blue text.

Can you guys guess what building this is? If you said Carleton, you are an estimate 10% correct. This is Dunton Tower, the tallest building at Carleton, but heavily used for Business students... and other subjects I have little to know knowledge of.... Last time I met a non business student there she told me she was carrying a dead buffalo... so I'm guessing history.

I went into Carleton to:
1) Run away from my family... well I gotta start a new life... live on my own... have minimal parents interaction... Most of you guys get it right?
2) Highest scholarship offer... which IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET BACK.... In my opinion, others always do so good for them!
3) No other university offered Advertising as a course [Turns out its a college thing not University... University its considered marketing].... So I stuck with communication studies
[I applied to 12... and I got into 11/12. Kinda rejected most of them since their programs seemed like anyone could qualify... Like Laurier, Western, Brock, etc...

My first year was:
FALL
- Japanese 1110 [1.0]
- Astronomy [0.5]
- Natural History [0.5] (Animal studies)
- Communication Studies [0.5]

WINTER- Japanese 2110 [1.0]
- Communication Studies [0.5]
- Survey of Accounting [0.5]
-Ontario Animal Studies [0.5]

- Computer Science for Arts [0.5]

I switched out of Earth Science, Psychology, and Music to take Natural History, while I dropped out of Ontario Animal Studies [It's named something else] because I was failing it [I AM GOD AWFUL at Multiple choice]

Thanks to Business [ I got A-] I pursued into Sprott as a minor in business.
I was going to pursue Japanese, but I felt it would be short sighted as an advertiser.
I was going to pursue astronomy, but it was science without the math.... wtf?
I was going to go into a stream for Communication Studies, but it would limit me in 4th year to take what I want.

I decided to go into Business as a minor to become an Advertiser/ Marketer. And with my background in media [Films, Social media], this was the way for me to go.

So now... Why most of you are on my blog...

Recommended Courses from Sam:
Well... Depends on your major, depends on your minor, depends on your interests...
I had a hard time figuring out what I wanted, so I dropped and switched courses everyday. You have 2 weeks every first semester to decided your final schedule. And if you do academically well, [B+, you can take overload, (6 courses per semester instead of 5 [3.0 vs. 5.0].

ALSO Don't be Stupid. I was. I asked in my first year course, "When can we take Co-op?" in my first day of uni. Course coordinator, "Did you not read the course outline, you take it next year, duh!"
Everyone called me a dumbass. -_- But I know they didn't know either those bas... anywho.
[Heads up first week of courses is also pointless USUALLY.]

I will give two lists, one is an easy A, one is directed courses more useful for yourself in the future.

Easy A:
- ASL: American Sign Language [Simple course to follow and participation]
- Any Language course BESIDES FRENCH. [We're in Canada, next to Quebec, they expect you to know it if you're Canadian, and they will test you. If you know at least 5 words in French you're kicked out of the first year course]
Options: Chinese, German, Japanese... w/e there's more I think.
- Film Studies [All you do is watch movies... easy]
- ANY First Year Seminar, its goal is to make you get use to university. [No exam]
- Geography [I think... I heard its not too bad.]
- History if you are interested...
- KINDA Astronomy... it's weird... Physics without the math :/
- Linguistics
- Math... if you did grade 12 math and did well. it's a repeat
- Music... any honestly they're easy just listen.
- Philosophy... If you know what I say and you can say what I want because you understand the world of how to see and how to do, You make up crap and you keep going you're fine. [Meaning of Life is depressing course...]
- Religion... Memorize, however CAN BE USEFUL if you were to understand how to understand everyone's perspectives
- Natural History, always recommended, however it's also hard... because its 150-250 multiple choice exams worth 40-60% of your grade. [You can learn about animals having sex! (Bees have the worst kind of sex though....]
- ... We have south Asian Studies? Say word!
-Paleontology... Dinosaurs anyone?
- Canadian Studies
- Any Culture Studies usually...
- Earth Studies: Natural disasters and I think Rocks and minerals... It's been too long.
- COMPUTER SCIENCE: EASIEST COURSE [What is a mouse, what is a computer]

Courses Worth your Time:
Now these courses maybe harder, but if you take them they WILL help you in your future for your degree, job, networking, and value.
- Journalism [However its a double major restricted only, if you take journalism...]
- Human Rights, You want to help give a voice as PR or communicate ideas, you need to know the rights [Trust me, in marketing you get introuble SO MUCH... you need to know what you can or cannot do]
- English, Love or hate, more writing makes you a better writer [PR especially or writers]
- Criminology, I know some of you are interest, so it makes sense.
- Economics, First year isn't useful I admit... alot of it is out of date, but eh it looks good on the resume!
- Political Science ... Half of you want to do PR, these are your clients.
- Psychology ... understand the mind set
- Public Affairs ... understand... the public?
- Gender Studies, it's really biased towards feminism though, so if thats an interest pursue it.
FUNNY THING, in 2nd year, one of my courses for communication studies, our guest speaker was a Sex-torian, someone who learns the history of sex... All she showed were the history of teenage boys ... wangs.... ye everyone in the class covered their eyes. And I ended up writing a report about why is porn a positive influence in our society... Something new everyday.
- Sociology ... understand social activity
- Anthropology... understand human behavior
- Entrepreneur  ... make your own business!
- BUSINESS. Business is a perfect match to communications. You need to make money, business got your back, Comm people got creativity, BAM it's your best friend.
Took me a year to pursue business, and personally, that's how I networked the best around Ottawa.

So this is a general understanding, I will add more or less depending on everyone's opinions.
Look into these Subjects and look at the courses, if you're interested try it! Nothing is permanent! :D

Good Luck First years! If you have any more questions, holler at my at my Twitter.
